Kids Activities to Curb Winter Break Boredom

winter break

Winter break is an exciting time, often filled with Christmas and New Year’s festivities.

The only problem is the non-holiday days can be quite boring for kids. Cooped up inside for the winter, it’s easy for kids to get antsy during winter break.

Here are a few fun ways to keep kids active over winter break.

Outdoor Winter Fun

If you live in a place where it gets cold enough to snow, then try some outdoor activities! As long as everyone bundles up with hats, gloves, layers, boots, and snow-resistant pants, winter outdoor activities can be fun for the whole family. Some ideas include:

  • Sledding
  • Skiing
  • Snowboarding
  • Building a snowman
  • Snowball fight
  • Building a snow fort

Family Talent Show

Let your kids flex their creativity and interests with a little family talent show! Give everyone one day to prepare their talent. The next day, host your talent show. Allow each person in the family to perform their talent. Feel free to host as casual or formal of a talent show as you’d like. For example, kids can step up in front of the living room one at a time to show their talent, or you can create an entire set with costumes, music, etc.

Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way for kids to connect with their community and give back to others. Consider dedicating some time to volunteering over winter break. The options are endless.

  • Sing Christmas songs at a senior living community.
  • Make and deliver homemade gifts.
  • Help at an animal shelter.
  • Serve meals to the elderly or homeless.
  • Adopt a family to gift to on Christmas.
  • Pick up trash around the community.

Visit a Museum

Sneak some learning in with a trip to local art, history, or science museums. Many museums have children’s programs during winter break, so there is often a lot for kids to do. Consider making the day even more exciting by creating a scavenger hunt for the museum for your kids. Check online, some museums may already have one you can print out!

Staycation

While you may have a small trip planned to see family for the holidays, consider adding a staycation to the schedule. There’s no need to plan an expensive, elaborate trip that’s far away. Find things to explore in your own community or state.

Sure, the weather typically isn’t as great over winter break, but that doesn’t mean kids have to be bored! There are plenty of fun activities for your family to do this winter break.
